Course description

Boost your career the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety course has been specifically designed to develop knowledge and skills required for working as an OHS professional within any work context.  The Cert IV WHS is a qualification for those seeking a practical approach to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. It reflects the role of workers who apply a broad knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of contexts and may include coordinators, advisors, facilitators, safety officers, safety representatives, safety supervisors and OHS committee members.


This workplace health and safety course is now the minimum requirement for OHS safety officer duties and management in many workplaces and is designed to enable participants to contribute to an organisation's OH&S Management Systems. 


Course duration

  • Full course (flexible delivery): Distance mode plus workplace projects. 

Flexible study hours may vary depending on experience of the student. To ensure currency of learning, participants will have a maximum of 18 months from the date of enrolment to complete their qualification. If participants need more time to complete assessments, they may request an extension in writing. You would need some practical WHS experience in a workplace to help your progression during the course. We suggest that you are aware of the work involved at a Certificate IV level of training, as it will always be more than you will anticipate. Units can be purchased and studied separately. Once you have started the course there are no refunds of the course fee.

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety BSB41415 is comprised of 10 units - 5 core units plus 5 elective units:

    • BSBRES401 Analyse and present research information
    • BSBCMM401 Make a presentation
    • BSBWHS402 Assist with compliance with WHS laws
    • BSBWHS403 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes
    • HLTWHS300A Contribute to WHS Processes
    • BSBWHS407 Assist with claims management, rehabilitation and return to work programs
    • BSBWHS405 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
    • BSBWHS404 Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
    • PUAWER002B Ensure workplace emergency prevention procedures, systems and process are implemented
    • BSBWHS406 Assist with responding to incidents

Specific detailed skill and knowledge components of each unit can be found within the training package. Units can be purchased and studied separately.


Prerequisites & Assessments

There are no pre-requisites for this course however the preferred pathways are after successful completion of:

  • BSB30712 Certificate III in Work Health and Safety or other relevant Certificate III qualifications or  
  • Vocational experience in work health and safety roles without a formal qualification.
To achieve competency in this course, students are required to complete a number of different assessment evidence including;
  • Short answer responses
  • Essay/report writing
  • Third party reports
  • Workplace projects
  • Video evidence of assessment activities






Materials provided

The student learning resources are sent in 4 stages. The first three units will be sent upon enrolment. Following successful completion and submission of the first unit the second set of learning resources will be sent.

On successful completion a coloured certificate with a coloured hard plastic wallet card, replica of the certificate. An emailed copy of your certificate when competent and a web based verification system to authenticate your award. 


Flexible delivery mode by distance learning

This course requires a strong commitment from students to complete. It is a comprehensive course and you must ensure that you have the capacity to complete prior to enrolling into this course. Safety is a very important role and the course is designed for a participant who may undertake a leadership role and provide guidance to others.

$890 Special when registering through Training You First Aid. Should you wish to apply for recognition of prior learning, an additional ‘Assessors $100 Fee for Service’ is payable to review the suitability of your RPL application.
