Course description

This combined Asthma and Anaphylaxis course is designed to train participants to deal with Asthma and Anaphylaxis attacks in a range of situations, including childcare centres, schools, public places, workplaces, and sporting events. Also suitable for individuals, family members, friends concerned about Asthma and / or Anaphylaxis for themselves or someone they know.

This unit of competency has been developed to provide participants with the skills to recognise an Asthma attack, provide first aid assistance and hold blue reliever medication in a first aid kit for Asthma emergencies within State and Territory guidelines. 

This course teaches you to recognise and assist a person suffering an anaphylactic reaction until the arrival of medical assistance. This training session includes the use of adrenaline auto-injecting devices (EpiPen®). The training is in response to the increasing number of individuals in the population with the potential to experience an anaphylaxis allergic reaction.


Course duration

Option 1: Flexible Learning:

  • Self-study with online eLearning prior to face to face training

  • Face to face (3.5 hour delivery) 

Option 2: Full Course:

  • Face to face, no online eLearning (5.5 hour delivery)

The combined accredited Anaphylaxis and Asthma skills set course is designed to comply with childcare first aid regulations. 


On 1 January 2012, the ‘National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care' began. It was introduced across Australia to help children have the best possible start in life. Under the Education and Care Services National Law ACECQA must publish a list of approved First Aid qualifications, Anaphylaxis Management training and Emergency Asthma Management training.

This combined course includes the 2 units above from ACECQA approved list:


Course content

  • Types of Asthma, allergic reactions, Anaphylaxis and the potential consequences of the conditions

  • Causes of Asthma, allergic reactions and Anaphylaxis

  • Prevention strategies and risk identification and minimisation for people at risk

  • Recognise signs and symptoms of Asthma, allergic reactions and Anaphylaxis

  • Control the situation and administer first aid treatment for Asthma and Anaphylaxis, including urgent request for emergency assistance

  • The use of the adrenaline auto-injectors (EpiPen®)

  • Identify children and others that may be at risk

  • Identify and understand an Asthma Action Plan and an Anaphylaxis Action Plan

  • Recognition of the signs of worsening Asthma and carry out Asthma first aid

  • Knowledge of reliever and preventer medication and their use

  • Knowledge of how to use a spacer device with reliever medication

  • Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) and how to prevent and manage

  • How to administer supporting first aid to an undiagnosed person


Minimum age for participants is 14 years. To be awarded the combined Anaphylaxis & Asthma skills set completion of the online eWorkbook for both topics are required prior to training and evidence given to the trainer (option 1).

Materials provided

A quality first aid manual. A coloured certificate with a coloured hard plastic wallet card, replica of the certificate. An emailed copy of your certificate when competent and a web based verification system to authenticate your award. The use of training reliever medication (bronchodilator) with small & large volume spacers & masks. The use of auto-injector trainers (EpiPen®). Up to date first aid material, PowerPoint presentation, DVDs.

In the face to face portion of the training, you are taught how to provide Anaphylaxis and Asthma first aid with confidence. Training You First Aid conducts progressive scenario based assessments throughout the course along with a multiple choice assessment. Individual practical assessment of competency in the delivery of reliever medication (bronchodilator) with spacer & mask. Individual practical assessment of competency in the use of auto-injectors (EpiPen®).
