PUAEME004A - Provide Emergency Care for Suspected Spinal Injury

Course description

This unit covers the competency required to minimise further injury to a casualty when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid.

The application of this unit in the workplace covers recognition and management of suspected spinal injuries.

The unit is typically relevant for personnel from emergency services and/or volunteer organisations or organisations which provide a first aid service in an environment where there is a risk of spinal injuries.


Course duration

  • Face to face, one day (7 hour delivery), theory and practical instruction.

Course content

  • Anatomy of the spine
  • Assess casualty and communicate effectively with casualty to provide reassurance
  • Management of the casualty with spinal injuries
  • Common causes of spinal injuries relevant to the work environment
  • Risks associated with moving a casualty with a spinal injury
  • Safe manual handling techniques
  • Signs and symptoms of suspected spinal injury
  • Techniques for manual stabilisation
  • Types of spinal immobilisation equipment available and demonstration of their use

Prerequisites

Minimum age for participants is 14 years. A current certificate in; HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support.

 

Materials provided

A quality first aid manual. A coloured certificate with a coloured hard plastic wallet card, replica of the certificate. An emailed copy of your certificate when competent and a web based verification system to authenticate your award. The use of quality scoop stretchers, spine boards, strapping, and training props. Up to date first aid material, PowerPoint presentation, DVD's.

GROUP BOOKINGS ONLY. We come to you, tailored to your industry (our group rate is capped 15 participants). Exceptional training delivered by two experienced Instructors.

 

Certificate validity

Certificate valid for 3 years as per industry standard. 

 

Prices

$2,700 our group rate is capped at 15 participants. Our courses may be eligible for Health Fund Rebate please check with your health fund for rebate and cover eligibility.

 

Assessment

In the face to face portion of the training, you are taught how to provide spinal care with confidence. Training You First Aid conducts progressive scenario and theory based assessments throughout the course.

This statement of attainment is nationally recognised and workplace approved throughout Australia.
