HLTSS00027 Occupational First Aid

Course description

This course is specifically designed for people employed as Occupational First Aiders and those aspiring to be employed in this role. This course provides participants with knowledge and skill to confidently recognise and respond to emergency situations. It is suitable for participants involved in the workplace first aid rooms or assisting occupational nursing staff.
The course is designed for individuals or organisations according to workplace or community first aid policy and procedures.
The combination of the unit HLTAID008 Manage First Aid Services and Resources, along with HLTAID007 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and HLTAID006 Provide Advanced First Aid, allows for the “Occupational First Aid Skill Set" certificate to be awarded. This qualification is required by some industries.

Course duration

Option 1: Flexible Learning:

• Self-study online eLearning prior to face to face training 

• Face to face, minimum 20 hour delivery, over two days with two experienced Instructors 

Course content

This includes but is not limited to the following topics:

• Principles of Occupational First Aid

• Legislation requirement

• Manage first aid records

• First aid kit and contents check list

• HLTAID006 Provide Advanced First Aid

• Occupational First Aider responsibilities

• First aid rooms and kits

• Communicable diseases

• Infection control – use of standard precautions

• HLTAID007 Provide Advanced Resuscitation

• Automated external defibrillation

• Clinical assessment of casualties

• Moving a casualty and evacuation

• WHS considerations and hazard identifications

• Establish and manage a first aid facility

• treatment of wounds and injuries

• Head, neck and spinal Injuries using immobilisation principles

• Major trauma – Triage

• Incident management skills

• Safe manual handling

• Interpret safety data sheets (SDS)

Prerequisites

Minimum age for participants is 14 years. Completion of the online eLearning is required prior to the face to face session. It is a requirement of this course that you are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on a CPR manikin placed on the floor. 

Materials provided

A quality first aid manual and a FREE CPR keyring resuscitation face mask. A coloured certificate with a coloured hard plastic wallet card, replica of the certificate. An emailed copy of your certificate when competent and a web based verification system to authenticate your award. For the flexible learning a self-paced online eVideo workbook is provided.

The use of quality hygienic; adult, junior & infant manikins, oxygen, suction, bag valve mask resuscitators and training defibrillators. The use of thermometers, auto-injector trainers, the use of training reliever medication (bronchodilators) with small & large volume spacers & masks. Up to date first aid material, PowerPoint presentation, DVDs.
